CYCLOCROSS 15 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPSDEC

Rain is a common occurrence in the Pacific Northwest. But how many people expected it? Rain fell all night Thursday and it only stopped just long enough to allow riders to load up for Friday’s opening events. Although the course was in chaos, the sky held steady throughout the day. Later that evening, the rains returned. And then stoppedstartedstopped, and then stayed on the entire day Saturday. It was a complete mess, as expected from a true cyclocross. The 0.6-mile circuit, which was flat and open, was easy enough to navigate without rain. Flat because there weren’t any long run-ups. Hilly enough to allow for many tricky off-camber turns. It was a mudfest, but it was still a challenge to keep your bike upright.

DUNLAP WINS SIXTH ONE

It didn’t matter if it stopped pouring. (It did.) The course was already so muddy that elite riders knew exactly what lay ahead for them Sunday. It was all Luna Chix MTBer Alison Dunlap in the women’s division. After severing her shoulder in January, Dunlap is now back on track. Alisons now have ten MTB/CX National Championships. This is the sixth title in cyclocross.

Ann Grande-Knapp, MTBer Ann Grande -Knapp, was fifth place finisher. She was also the defending CX Champion.

Jonathan Page won over MTBers Todd Wells and Ryan Trebon to win the men’s division. Marc Gullickson was second. Ryan was second because of a late race flat.

Page is the current CX Champion. Wells is the 2001 Champion, while Gullickson won in 1999 the national CX title.

THE LOCAL CONTINGENT

It was a pleasure to see how many racers in the Urban Cyclocross Series did. Emilio Cervantes and Mark Noble were both in the 40-44 category. These two local So Cal CX and XC racers are so fast they win the pro divisions. Junior Chance Noble and master Dorothy Wong were also locals who made the top five.

A special mention should go to Rebecca Much, Junior Women 15-18 Champion. Rebecca recently won the A/B Division at the Save the Drome Cross in Northbrook, IL. This was a fund-raising event in which racers competed only for bragging rights. This was my Official Racing Update (Dec 2), which contains the complete story.

DO-WELL MTBers

Scroll down to see the results. After the riders’ results information, I added the notable MTB experience. Special congratulations to all local riders who enjoyed great success this weekend. I hope that your bikes don’t rust before you get home.
